The biological monitoring program at the Cuatrociénegas Flora and Fauna Protection Area and the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (Programa de Conservación para el Desarrollo Sostenible—Procodes) have strengthened the application of the national standardized monitoring protocol for the monarch butterfly, which during the last three years has provided important records for butterfly conservation in the Coahuila desert region.

The monarch butterfly project in Cuatrociénegas also includes environmental education talks and workshops at schools and communities in the protected natural area.
