With the implementation of brigades under the Community Watch Program (Programa de Vigilancia Comunitaria—Provicom), along with the monitoring activities established in the annual operating program of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, the monarch butterfly undergoes ongoing monitoring in the western Sierra Gorda region.

Thanks to the training of the watch brigades, the national standardized monitoring protocol is currently being applied for the monarch; as a result, during 2015 and 2016, previously unknown passage, stopover and feeding sites have been identified.

In addition, the information generated has enabled the brigades to foster the restoration of specific sites, and management at the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve conducts environmental education activities to foster citizen awareness with respect to the care and conservation of the monarch butterfly migratory phenomenon in the region.
