Started in 2013, the Native Plant Society of Texas provides funding through a small-money grant application process for the creation or maintenance of monarch demonstration gardens and Monarch Waystations through purchase of native milkweed and nectar plants. Sites are public, so as to promote monarch habitat conservation, outreach and education to a wide audience.

The Native Plant Society of Texas visits and follows up with each site awarded a grant and schedules Monarch Larva Monitoring Project workshops throughout the state to promote the use of citizen science projects in habitat sites (Downs 2016).
