Monarchs in the West (Monarcas en el Oeste) is a digital social network-based tool that fosters monarch butterfly monitoring in order to expand the record of its distribution and recognize the western region as one of its migratory paths. It also seeks to foster public awareness with respect to the species’ conservation and its main passage, stopover and feeding sites.

This initiative, led by Conanp and the Baja California government through the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park, features the participation of the Ensenada municipal government; academia, through the BCMX Herbarium at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, and civil society through the organizations Pro Esteros, Terra Peninsular, Biocamc and CICEA Papalotzin. Monarchs in the West currently has more than 400 followers who provide information on butterfly sightings in the region.
