This western monarch monitoring project raises monarchs and tags and releases them, with help from prison inmates. The monarchs are released in Northern Washington, and the goal is to track their migration patterns south to determine which overwintering sites western monarchs migrate to and how they reach them. People can report sightings of tagged monarchs to Washington State University (WSU) to contribute to this research (James 2016; WSU 2012; WSU 2014).
