Through the implementation of the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (Programa de Conservación para el Desarrollo Sostenible—Procodes), the Temporary Employment Program (Programa de Empleo Temporal—PET), and the monitoring activities included in the annual operating program of the Sierra La Mojonera Flora and Fauna Protection Area, monarch butterfly monitoring was strengthened in the San Luis Potosí semi-desert valley region.

Watch and monitoring brigades have also been established to apply the national standardized monitoring protocol for the monarch. In the last two years, local communities have provided important records of passage and stopover sites that they have protected and restored themselves. In addition, the annual operating program of the Sierra La Mojonera Flora and Fauna Protection Area calls for environmental education talks and workshops at schools and communities in the area, aimed at creating public awareness with respect to the monarch butterfly migratory phenomenon.
