This State Wildlife Grant project addresses knowledge gaps in milkweed and monarch butterfly habitat in Idaho and Washington. The project focuses on collecting historical and contemporary monarch and milkweed distribution data in each state, to define the distribution and relative abundance of these species and identify key habitats and threats. The project will result in a coordinated monitoring strategy that will enable use of monitoring data to characterize, model, and understand threats to monarch habitat.
Additionally, information from this monitoring effort will be used to assess the conservation status of the monarch for inclusion as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in the State Wildlife Action Plans of Idaho and Washington. The project will also expand communication, networking, and information-sharing that support monarch conservation of breeding and flyway habitats. The project includes launch of a western monarch and milkweed website and field training programs.
